Monel is a very expensive alloy, with cost ranging from 5 to 10 times the cost of copper and nickel.Monel® alloys are nickel-base alloys that contain between 29 and 33 percent copper. Also known as nickel-copper alloys, Monel® alloys exhibit a number of beneficial properties, including:

high corrosion resistance to acids and alkalis
high mechanical strength
good ductility
a low coefficient of thermal expansion
The machineability of these alloys, however, is poor because of their tendency to quickly work-harden.

Initially created by metallurgist David H. Browne and patented in 1906, Monel® alloys are most often found in chemical plant equipment due to the their strong resistance to chemical corrosion. Small additions of aluminum and titanium, which form the K-500 alloy, increase strength, particularly at high temperatures, making it useful in aerospace applications.
