ASTM A240 Specification

The ASTM A240 covers chromium, chromium-nickel, and chromium-manganese-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet, and strip for pressure vessels and for general applications. A240 is one of the most common specifications for 300 series and 400 series stainless steel sheet.

ASTM 312 Specification

The ASTM 312 specification covers seamless, straight-seam welded, and cold worked welded austenitic stainless steel pipe that is intended for high-temperature and general corrosive service.  Please see the  ASTM Site for the full specification.

ASTM A358 Specification

The ASTM A358 specification includes electric-fusion-welded austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel pipe.  This pipe is suitable for corrosive, high-temperature service, and/or general applications.  The pipes are divided into five different classes:

Class 1 pipe is double welded by using filler metal in all passes and completely radiographed.
Class 2 pipes is double welded using filler metal in all passes with no radiography.
Class 3 pipes are single welded
Class 4 pipes are single welded, however the weld pass of Class 4 exposed to the inside pipe surface may be without filler metal addition.
Class 5 pipes are double welded using filler metal and is spot radiographed.

Weld defects are repaired by removal to sound metal and rewelding. Heat treatment is required on the original welds. The finished pipes undergo tension test, transverse guided-bend weld test, and hydrostatic test.

ASTM A778 Specification

The ASTM A778 specification  includes straight seam & spiral butt seam welded unannealed austenitic stainless steel tubular products.  These are intended for low/moderate temperatures, and corrosive service where treatment is not necessary for corrosion resistance. The tubular products are made from:

flat-rolled steel sheet
coil
plate by a shielded arc-welding process

The welds are produced by manual or automatic electric-welding process.Weld defects are repaired by removal to sound metal and rewelding. Transverse tension test and transverse-guided bend test are performed on welded joints. Finished products have smooth ends free or burrs.
